The
aims of the English standards
The overall
aim of the English standards
is to enable students to develop
skills in
English to a level commensurate
with that required for entry
into the workplace,
further or higher education,
where English is the medium
of communication or
instruction. The standards
are focused largely on achieving
skilled and functional
outcomes for students. Compared
with English and EFL curricula
in English speaking
countries, attention to English
culture, literature, and society
receive less
attention. Nevertheless, careful
attention is given throughout
to promoting awareness of
intercultural values, for
example through:
• topics and themes recommended
for teaching vocabulary;
• the recommended text ranges;
• the varieties of English
pronunciation for listening;
the standards for language
functions and social interaction;
• the uses of figurative language
and idiomatic expressions
for older students.
Subject Matter
and Application
Subject matter is clearly
outlined in the curriculum
standards.
Over the course, students
will be engaging with a variety
of texts. These texts may
include:
Listening and
Speaking radio broadcasts,
introductions, songs, plays,
news reports (radio), small
group discussion, interviews,
persuasive speeches, debates,
oral storytelling, performance
poetry, recount, digital media.
Reading and
Viewing dictionaries, thesauruses,
recounts (personal and historical),
anecdotes, picture books,
myths and legends, short stories,
novels, poetry, films, television
drama/comedy, reviews, print
and electronic news, reports,
computer games, web sites,
CD ROMs, digital communication.
Writing and
Shaping autobiography, biography,
short stories (conventional
and unconventional), novels,
poetry, reviews, essays, news
reports, business/academic
style reports, business letters
(e.g. application, complaint),
letters to the editor, hyper-fiction,
montage, hyper-poetry, web
site.
When studying these texts,
students will focus explicitly
on the language features (e.g.
grammar, punctuation and spelling
skills) needed to use these
texts effectively and appropriately.
These texts also form the
basis of units focusing on
the use of language across
the range of contexts. Years
7 and 8 English and SOSE are
integrated to allow in-depth
studies and to engage in the
development of significant
literacy skills.
The open-ended
tasks prepared as part of
the assessment program assist
the varying abilities of our
students. More advanced students
in English will have access
to a range of opportunities
to showcase, extend and pursue
particular English language
interests, for example through:
- the Wide Reading, Viewing
and Listening Program
- literary competitions
- contributions to the Student
Media Centre (SMC) web
- workshops with writers-in-residence
and visiting authors
- internal and external competitions
- 'Days of Excellence'.
Assessment
Student outcomes for Reading
and Viewing, Listening and
Speaking, and Writing and
Shaping will be benchmarked
against State and National
standards for English. Achievement
will be determined by evidence
collected through observation
of students as they take part
in language activities and
focused analysis of more formal
assessment tasks, both written
and spoken.
